Apraxia Olympics – Summer 2019
IMPROVING SPEECH INTELLIGIBILITY THROUGH THE USE OF PROMPT,
PLAY AND SOCIAL OPPORTUNITIES
For children ages 5-8
A small, intensive and fun-filled group program for children with a diagnosis of Childhood Apraxia of Speech or motor speech difficulties. Two Speech-Language Pathologists will run the group using a variety of interventions, including the PROMPT© Method, to target the motor speech priorities of each child, while also providing opportunities for socialization and language development in a sensory-friendly setting. PROMPT© uses tactile – kinesthetic prompting to help re-shape individual speech sounds up to sentence and conversation levels.
Sessions will include group activities in the sensory gym, such as obstacle courses and other gross motor activities, fine motor activities such as crafts, and facilitated pretend play and game play. Other interventions that are utilized in this group include the Kaufman Speech-to-Language Protocol, DIR/Floortime and Social Thinking, among others.
Goals include:
- Improving motor speech skills to facilitate intelligible, verbal communication in a peer group setting
- Facilitating use of expanded expressive language to communicate wants and needs
- Improving speech and language skills to develop ability to self-advocate among peers, and participate in turn-taking activities and collaborative play
- Encouraging appropriate social interactions in a small-group setting.
When: Tuesday and Thursdays; July 23 – August 22 Time: 1:00 -2:30 pm
Cost: $1,350 per 5 week session
