Tele-Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy sessions via telehealth offer many wonderful advantages. This is a great opportunity for parents and caregivers to become more aware and involved in therapy sessions and scheduling is often more flexible. Our therapists are able to provide the same level of skilled care via telehealth as they are in-clinic. We are able to work on fine and gross motor skills, ideation and planning, and provide a unique opportunity to empower children and caregivers to take control over sensory regulation and develop skills related to ADLs (activities of daily living; such as dressing, hand washing, toileting, shoe tying and more!) within their home environments.
Tele-Speech/Language Therapy
Speech-language therapy sessions via telehealth offer many wonderful advantages. This is a great opportunity for parents and caregivers to become more aware and involved in therapy sessions and scheduling is often more flexible. Our therapists are able to provide the same level of skilled care via telehealth as they are in-clinic. We are able to treat articulation disorders, work with late talkers, help develop language, use AAC, improve reading and social skills, sequencing, and more!
Tele- Feeding Therapy
With both occupational and speech-language therapists on staff training in a variety of feeding methods, including the SOS Approach, feeding therapy can be designed to fit your child and your family. Feeding consultations and therapy held via telehealth offer a unique opportunity to help bridge the gap in carry over between foods accepted and tried in therapy versus foods accepted and tried at home. This is a wonderful opportunity to have highly trained eyes helping assess a variety of factors that may be impacting successful feeding therapy consultation.
Reading Tutoring
Orton- Gillingham Approach:
An initial assessment and weekly tutoring sessions are conducted with a speech-language pathologist who has completed training in using the multi-sensory Orton-Gillingham approach. This could be both for struggling readers or parents looking for structured phonics, reading and spelling work while their child is out of school. An hour once weekly is recommended but this can be adjusted based on individual needs.
LiPS Approach:
The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Approach for reading, spelling, and speech is an additional program offered by speech-language pathologies at Emerge. This is a multi sensory approach that helps children learn to label the oral-motor movements that create phonemes and aids in learning to read and spell. Session frequency is set by the therapist and family depending on a number of factors.
Parent /Caregiver Coaching
For some children, interacting directly with a therapist via telehealth to address goals can be extremely difficult. This can be for a variety of reasons. In these cases, moving towards the therapy model of “parent coaching” may be more effective. Parent coaching will vary from family to family, depending on goals and areas of need. But regardless of goal, parents and caregivers will be able to work directly with their child will receiving thoughtful feedback (either in the moment or after) from a therapist.
Mindfulness Meditation Strategies
Some research has shown that mindfulness meditation can improve attention and memory. You can practice mindfulness in a quiet place, during routine activities, and in situations you feel you might have trouble recalling later. Click here to learn more about mindfulness meditation strategies!
IEP Reviews
IEP meetings can be stressful and often leave caregivers feeling confused or alone. Our therapists are happy to speak with you about your child’s educational plan and help you come to better understand it, along with making other suggestions as needed.
Quarantine Survival Schedules
If COVID-19 and “shelter-in-place” have left you feeling like your daily routine is shatters, let one of our therapists work with you via telehealth or over the phone to help identify areas of need and create a custom schedule or plan for your day or week. The therapist will be able to help provide general plans for structure along with activity ideas to help your family not only survive, but thrive, during this time.
