AAC Adventures – Summer 2023
DEVELOPING LITERACY AND CONFIDENCE IN PEER INTERACTION FOR USERS OF ALTERNATIVE & AUGMENTATIVE COMMUNICATION
Ages 3-5
AAC Adventures is a club focused on developing communication and literacy for children who use Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) systems. This program will focus on a core word and theme each week. This theme will then be explored in a storybook, during literacy activities (such as shared reading, predictable chart writing, and phonological awareness activities), with customized sensory experiences and group activities. By focusing group activities on book reading, children will develop emerging literacy skills as well as learn skills to communicate with other AAC users. This group is co-led by two Speech-Language Pathologists who have training and clinical experience working with a variety of AAC methods, including picture communication, LAMP WFL, Unity, WordPower, PODD, and Snap+Core.
Goals:
- Participate in shared reading
- Use target core vocabulary words during literacy and group activities
- Develop turn-taking and cooperation skills
- Improve conversational skills, including greeting, commenting, and saying goodbye

Children are expected to attend every session (barring illness), as the sessions build on each other and group dynamics are an important component. The payment for this club is different from the others, and is $100 per week. If you have any questions about the new Emerge Clubs changes or payment options, please refer to our FAQ!
If your child is not attending therapy sessions at Emerge, we will be in touch with you to set up a brief free screening to determine if this program is a good match for your child.
