Hi there! I’m excited to take a moment to share more about our Sensory Based Consulting Program. As a pediatric occupational therapist with over 8 years of experience, I’ve seen firsthand how impactful sensory integration strategies can be in the clinic, and at home.
In my work as an occupational therapist, I’ve often seen families who could benefit from more structured support outside of traditional therapy sessions. Some families are looking to build on what they’ve already started in direct OT, while others may not need weekly therapy but still need help understanding and supporting their child’s sensory needs at home. The sensory based consulting program at Emerge Pediatric Therapy was developed to meet those in-between needs. The purpose is to provide education, practical strategies, and individualized guidance to help families navigate sensory processing in the real-life context of their daily routines and environments.
Why Sensory Consulting?
While direct therapy can be essential for some children, many families benefit from structured conversations and personalized problem-solving to help with:
- Creating smoother daily routines (like mornings, after school, or bedtime).
- Setting up home environments that align with their child’s sensory profile.
- Understanding how sensory needs impact behavior, attention, and emotional regulation.
- Supporting neurodivergent caregivers or siblings, not just the child receiving services.
This approach focuses on empowering families with the tools and confidence to address sensory challenges in real time through routines, environmental modification, activity planning, and collaborative strategies.
What Sessions Look Like
Each session is tailored to the family’s needs, but common focus areas include:
- Sensory education: Helping caregivers understand their child’s sensory profile and what that means in daily life.
- Routine planning: Designing step-by-step strategies that promote regulation throughout transitions like waking up, getting dressed, mealtime, and bedtime.
- Home setup guidance: Identifying how to make sensory supports more accessible and integrated into natural family spaces.
- Environmental modifications: Reworking room layouts, noise levels, lighting, or activity flow to reduce dysregulation and promote calm.
- Family-wide strategies: Supporting not just the child, but parents and siblings who may also have sensory needs or benefit from adjusted expectations and roles.
Often, families begin with a few structured sessions and then check in periodically as needs evolve. The goal is always to equip caregivers with knowledge and tools that work for their routines, their home, and their child.
Practical, Flexible, Family-Centered
Sensory based consulting fills a unique space between direct therapy and everyday parenting. It’s practical, proactive, and built around each family’s specific dynamic.
Whether you’re preparing for a big change (like a move or a new sibling), trying to make sense of daily sensory struggles, or simply hoping to build more peace and predictability at home, the sensory based consulting program offers flexible, individualized support to help you get there.
